If there’s one thing that I see over and over again, when people ask about success from successful people, it’s this.
Rule 1: Know what you want
I believe that all problems are interpersonal-relationship problems. There’s no problem on Earth that human beings encounter that can’t be explained by an interpersonal-relationship.
From that, any time someone isn’t happy with who they are, what they have or where they are, it’s usually for one of three reasons.
- They’re doing something they don’t want to do, but other people want them to do
- They don’t know what they want to do, but they’re doing something other people want them to do
- They aren’t doing what they want to do
All three of these problems stem from the same core principle.
They don’t know what they want.
There is a second and third part to rule 1, which I’ll get to in a minute.
It blows my mind that someone can moan, complain, be unhappy, unfulfilled or miserable.
And when you ask them “ok, so what do you want?” they don’t have an answer.
It’s not as if we’re incapable of knowing what we want.
I always find people who tell me that they procrastinate funny, because if I set their house on fire I can guarantee they wouldn’t procrastinate until they get out of the building.
All of a sudden, they know what they want.
The key – the trick – the secret…
Is to spend more time working out what you want. And really working it out.
Write it out.
Spend time on it.
Even a day.
Even an HOUR.
When was the last time you really sat down and wrote down what you want.
Something that could change the entire course of your life. Your year. Your week!
Rule 1: know what you want.
