There’s so much epic, helpful stuff out there that it can be a pain to try and sift through it all.
I tend to get a lot of my inspiration, help and news from podcasts that I listen to in the car, out running, at the gym or procrastinating at home.
The thing I love more than ANYTHING about podcasts, is that you get to know the hosts and how they work. There’s something about feeling part of a community with podcasts that is especially helpful with small businesses.
WordPress businesses need to listen to business based podcasts as much as anything. Not just WordPress or design or dev based shows. It helps you GROW your business ideas and learn how to work on and manage your business, not work for it.
WP Elevation podcast
Troy Dean
wpelevation.com/category/podcast
Who else of course? Troy Dean is a natural interviewer and has spoken to some of the biggest and brightest names in the WordPress world. His guests are a pleasure to listen to and they ALL drop huge knowledge bombs.
Best thing about it? The quickfire round at the end is always great. I particularly love the question “how can you get more referrals and make your customers love you?” The answer is almost always “do great work”.
Listen to episode…Frankly they’re all epic, but episode #12 with Miriam Schwab is my personal favourite.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. Almost immediately, over each episode, a few recurring themes become apparent. Get off the tools, document your process and work on your business not just on WordPress sites. And charge more. If you’re serious about running a WordPress BUSINESS. Listen to this podcast.
Digital Marketer Podcast
Kieth Krance, Molly Pittman and Ralph Burns
The big dogs. I’m an avid DM’er and love everything they produce. Here’s a secret, if you want to perfom better at your OWN business, listen to what they’re saying (their blog is gold too). Take what they’re talking about and apply it to your business before unleashing it on your customers. You’ll seem like the smartest marketer in the room.
Best thing about it? The sheer practicality of what they talk about. I’m a massive fan on step-by-step stuff and the Digital Marketer Podcast has the in spades. Sensible, real advice on digital marketing practices explained by some epic guests.
Listen to episode…Episode #49 talks about why keeping it simple on Facebook can go a long way for your business.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. If you want to go beyond your WordPress business, Digital Marketer is a great place to start. It taught me that I don’t have a traffic problem, I have an offer problem. And I’ve been devouring their content ever since.
Xero Podcast
Elizabeth Ü
I use Xero as my accounting software and discovered the podcast when I was looking to understand how other small businesses have used it. Very quickly I saw a network of small businesses being interviewed explaining their journey and processes.
Best thing about it? Xero has some weight to their brand so they get some great guests on. Also, there is something refreshing about a larger business understanding the value of network based content marketing and doing it well. If nothing else, listen to Xero on HOW to run a podcast. Also, they have a discount code for their software on each episode.
Listen to episode…Episode #35: The spirit of having entrepreneurial mentors. I valued this idea so much that it’s wonderful to have other people tell me I’m right. You need a mentor.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. Again, we as WordPress businesses need to move past the one piece of CMS software and out to how a business works. The Xero podcast is easy to listen to and covers such a wide range of ideas and topics that I’ve started looking at other ideas just off the back of it.
Freakonomics Radio
Stephen J. Dubner
npr.org/podcasts/452538045/freakonomics-radio
If you haven’t read Freakonomics, then go out and buy it. Not only is it a well written book, it explores the hidden side of the world. The podcast explores the same themes, from mattress stores to food poisoning. The connected systems that change and affect our perceptions and the economies of where we live. Also, it’s hilarious.
Best thing about it? Dubner is a natural presenter. It’s more a radio program than a traditional (traditional? It’s a 10 year old medium) podcast. Stephen interviews guests and presents stories from around the world, going to locations that have seen changes or people that are different.
Listen to episode…May 4 2016 How to Get More Grit in Your Life. This episode explores a person’s level of stick-to-itiveness and how it is directly related to their level of success.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. Ever wanted to listen to a well written, funny and educational podcast that makes you seem smarter? This is it. WordPress professionals are a naturally curious bunch and Freakonomics Radio is a great way to open your eyes to the wider hidden world.
PressCast Podcast
Mike Killen, Kristina Romero, Wendie Huis in ‘t Veld, Mark Fouet, Simon Kelly, Nathan Wrigley, Paul Kowen, Cath Beaton.
Be warned. I’m one of the presenters of this podcast. I’m also the least smart person in the room. PressCast started as a “scratch our itch” kind of way. We wanted to talk more often and learn how to podcast. With that, the presenters grew and the topics we talk about got wider and wider. The ultimate goal? Produce content that our CUSTOMERS would want to listen to.
Best thing about it? None of us are podcasting pros. We just wanted to produce something that our customers would want to listen to. Also, anyone who presents gets a copy of the podcast material for them to do what they want with. Also also, if you want to present on it – let us know.
Listen to episode…Episode #4: Building your email list We had a blast making this episode and I think it’s one of the best produced.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. Purely WordPress focused, but on skills that help you help your customers. We just wanted to provide value to our customers, so your customers will benefit too.
WP Innovator Podcast
Lee Jackson
Lee Jackson, is without a doubt, the most energetic and enthusiastic person I’ve ever met. Truly a DELIGHT to listen to, his podcast interviews a range of business (including me) and talks about everything WordPress.
Best thing about it? Lee’s energy. He’s a natural podcaster and his zeal for businesses, entrepreneurialism and WordPress all leak through your speakers into your earballs. It’s just a great podcast for anyone WordPress to listen to and the connected Facebook group is just as helpful.
Listen to episode…I could mention my episode (#32 – Marketing Funnels & Hacks) but in truth, my favourite episode is #28 – Visual Builders.
Why WordPress businesses should listen. Purely WordPress focused, but on skills that help you help your customers. We just wanted to provide value to our customers, so your customers will benefit too.
Boss. That about does it.
My favourite podcast out of the lot? Probably PressCast because I LOVE talking to people smarter than me. I know a lot of people say they don’t have time to listen to podcasts, but with
easy connections to car radios and smartphones, do yourself a favour and listen to a couple.
