Stop telling people what you do

With all the other marketers, consultants, and freelancers out there, how can you stand out in a crowded marketplace?

I was looking through our testimonials the other day, and one thing stuck with the business owners who felt they stood out.

It’s simple but so effective.

I was at an event a little while back, and it was packed with marketers.

Wall to wall with social media experts, agency owners, freelancers, and consultants.

Varying degrees of size, scale, and success.

Some were considered influencers in their field, almost like micro-celebrities.

Others were smaller and more under the radar, or just starting out.

And as I had more and more conversations with these people, something within the first 10 seconds stuck out at me.

I’d speak to one person and I’d ask what they do.

They’d tell me “I help agencies build recurring revenue into their business.”

I’d speak to another and they’d say “I run a web design agency.”

I looked around and saw lots of stands where different businesses were doing the usual event and sponsor thing.

Giving away an iPad or a raffle for a gift certificate.

But there were CROWDS of people surrounding one or two of the other people.

And these people didn’t even have stalls.

If I was a stall owner, I’d be pissed.

In fact, one of them even came up to me and said “I can’t believe I spent all this money on sponsoring this event, and hardly anyone is coming to my stall!”

So I asked them what they did.

“We’re a design agency that specialises in WordPress for small businesses.”

“Ok” I replied “and the person surrounded by admiring fans. What do they do?”

“They help YouTubers sign big sponsors…oh”

The penny dropped for them

While everyone else was telling people what work they did.

The people surrounded by fans and audience and leads and customers, they told people what they got if they followed them.

Standing out in a crowded marketplace is tough when you’re playing the same game as everyone else.

Instead, when people can easily identify a THING in their life that will get better or easier or more of (or less of), they bypass all the other noise and focus on you.

I help agencies sell a $25,000 marketing funnel.

I help freelancers hire their first VA for $100 a week

I help agency owners build websites for under $1000 and sell them for $10,000

What’s the thing that someone gets if they work with you?
