Staying on track in the day to day

I open Circle to chat to the team, while that’s loading, I bring up WhatsApp web to see if I’ve had any messages.

I click on a Facebook link that Olivia sent me and while that’s loading I switch back to Circle.

One of the team is asking me to check a page on our site.

I click that link and then head back to Facebook to watch the video Liv sent me.

But I see a notification and click on that, where I then reply to a comment before heading back to whatsapp to get the first link Liv sent where I see…someone sent me a funny meme, better go create something funny in response…

And it goes on and on and on.

Which obviously means nothing gets done.

And I have a theory that distractions aren’t the problem.

Lack of attention is the problem.

Sounds like the same thing – it isn’t.

A good diet means eating less processed food, less sugar and more vegetables.

But that doesn’t mean that bad food doesn’t exist.

The goal is to not eliminate bad food, but avoid it. Focus on good food.

Which is why my focus for day-to-day tasks is built around two principles:

  • Habit/routine
  • Batching

For example, my routine is to write these emails on a Friday. I also write ALL of them on a Friday.

When I record YouTube videos, I do them ALL at the same time.

Monday at 9am is “reflection/meditation” time.

1pm every day is lunch.

Of course I have free time and lazy time and relaxation time.

But you’d be staggered at how much you can get done in 1 focused hour, compared to 4 unfocused hours.

Even 1 hour a day, dedicated to the right tasks, will massively move your business forward.
