4 unusual places to find customers (and 1 way to reach them)

I’m going to show you 4 unusual places to find customers (and 1 way to reach them).

We’re all looking for more customers for our marketing funnel business and more ways to find customers in general. The most common question I’m asked, is “how can I find more customers for my funnel agency?”

The most important aspect of finding new customers is knowing WHO you’re looking to find.

Think about in the movies when they are trying to find a criminal who is on the run. What’s the first thing they do? They understand as much as they can about the bad guy, and then they go to the places where that bad guy hangs out.

Dive bars, strip clubs, drug dens, abandoned car parks. But enough about my weekends. We want to find our criminal. The hero in the movie usually has a hunch or source who can identify where the criminal will be. And wouldn’t you know it, when the hero turns up, our criminal is sat exactly where they thought they’d be.

If you want to find more customers we have to know where those customers hang out. I’m can show you 4 unusual places that customers hang out and 1 amazing way to reach them.

I need you to grab a pen and a piece of paper, Because we’re going to make a list. In fact we going to make 4 lists of different interests that we’ve gathered from our customers.

Kindle

The Kindle store has an estimated 3 million books available through Amazon. Roughly 1.3 million of those is estimated to be e-books. E-books have exploded in popularity as has reading in general. Your customers are reading more and more books, and the authors are becoming more and more famous.

Kindle will tell you exactly what your customers have been reading and the types of authors and books that they follow. The more we know about what our customers read and who they follow, the better understanding we have about our customers.

Your customers are in the Kindle store  every single day and Kindle can tell you exactly what they’re reading.

Let’s say for example that I want to build marketing funnels for fitness coaches. If I head over to amazon.com and searching the Kindle department for an author that I know my customers like, I can search for a book by the author.

I can even search by keyword for phrases and terms used by my customers. For example my customers if they run personal fitness businesses, might like to read self-help books, business books, coaching books, fitness books and training books.

I can find a few Facebook groups or LinkedIn groups, who my customers are connected to and join them. By scouring those groups I can discover the books and authors which that community follow. I then want to search for those books and authors inside the Kindle store.

For example Hal Elrod’s book Miracle Morning is very popular among fitness coaches running a business.

Miracle morning, Hal Elrod, Kindle books

I love this book to buy the way

By selecting Miracle Morning on Kindle I am presented with a load of other books  which people have bought.

This gives me a list of authors, books, companies, lifestyles and groups who my potential customers look up to.

Kindle suggested books, miracle morning, authors

The more audience research you do the better armed you are

Write down the other authors and books that appear in the “also bought” section. Then start again with another book either from the suggested list or from your research in Facebook groups.

YouTube

YouTube is another area that gives suggestions based on subscriptions and related videos. However, YouTube is also the second largest search engine  on the Internet. So we are going to find YouTube channels that belong to our customers, and look at who they subscribe to.

head over to YouTube.com and search for phrases for businesses that potentially could be your customers, who also would have a YouTube channel.

For example if my customers are fitness coaches then I can easily search fitness coaching into YouTube and find loads of examples and content creators. As you can see from my example below there are 1.8 million results of people who either work in the fitness coaching industry or are helping people in the fitness coaching industry.

Fitness coaching, youtube, content creators

By selecting The Body Coach TV channel above, for example. I’m presented with related channels, a list of followers from everyone that comments and suggested videos when I look at any one of the videos.

The larger channels  will use other niche and micro-celebrities in their videos to which also gives us a list of influencers.

write down the influences,Big channels, and niche celebrity names on your list because we’re going to use them later.

Podbean/iTunes

We can do the exact same thing with Podbean and iTunes. Take a look at the podcasts that your customers listen to And take a look at the suggested podcasts.

Marketing funnel customers, sell marketing funnels, marketing funnel pod casts

Just from searching “Fitness”, we been presented with hundreds of podcasts with an audience. I can also see the author or influencer and the name of the podcast. And if I click through to that pod cast it will show me more related costs.

Write down 10 to 15 suggested podcasts that your audience might listen to.

Appstore/Playstore

Finally, check out some of the apps in the Google play store or the Apple App Store which you know your customers use. For example, with our fitness example they might be the under armour body trainer or map my run. Or the Garmin sports Tracker. But as they are also businesses they might use Trello, Zoom and PayPal or Stripe.

The more I know about the tools and apps and websites that my customers using visit. The more I know about how to reach them.

Those 4 places where your customers are hanging out. But now we need a way to reach them  knowing this information.

Facebook Insights

Facebook Insights is a free tool included in the Facebook advertising platform. On the left-hand side look for “Adverts Manager”.

Facebook advertising, marketing funnel Facebook ads, Facebook insights

Prepared to find some incredible user data

Now head up to the top and open up the menu you might need to select “all tools”, and find the Audience Insights button.

Facebook audience insights, Facebook advertising marketing funnels

The audience insights tool Displays demographics, suggested page likes, activities and other data about that audience. When you first open up Audience Insights, it displays all of Facebook’s audiences demographics (it might be set to a country like United States).

We are then going to take our four lists of influences, authors, companies, books and other interests. And use them in the interest search bar.

Facebook audience interests, Facebook audience builder

Use your list in this interests search bar

Using our list of discovered interests we can start to See more about people who have those interests and use Facebook as a platform to reach out to them. Using this interest search bar allows us to see the other pages, likes, activity and other data on people who have those interests.

If you can find an interest with an audience of around 50K to 200K that’s a good audience size to work with for Facebook advertising.

The reason Facebook advertising sales for many businesses is because they focus on the ads, copy, images et cetera. Rather than researching their audience.

Use Facebook insights to build out an audience where you can start using Facebook advertising to reach out to your customers. Spend at least 3 to 5x more time on audience research than creating the advert. You want to spend as much time as possible understanding their interests and demographics, before committing to advertising.
